C5 Hdi Intercooler full of oil is the turbo naff?

Post by davkirk »

hi, i have recently boght a 2002 c5 hdi with 86000 miles on the clock, last week it lost power, it had blown the bottom hose off the intercooler, there is a lot of oil in the pipes & intercooler, does this mean my turbo is knackered? any help would be greatly appreciated,
thanks all.

Not necessaraly, it depends how much oil, you will always get some oil in the air intake on an engine thats done any ammount of miles, from the engine breather system. If it drives OK and doesn't chuck a lot of smoke out I wouldn't worry.

I've never seen C5 engine close to - but if its like the older ones the crankcase fumes will be fed into the air intake before the turbo and so your oil probably comes with the fumes rather than from the turbo itself.

I am unfamiliar with the C5 motor but certainly quite a lot of oil in the intercooler/pipework is not indicative of problems on any of the older peugeot TD engines regardless of mileage, I would be surprised if I came across a dry one!

All the intercooler pipes on my Xantia TD were soaked in oil.Although at 171k miles it ran sweet as a nut & only needed a cupfull of oil between services. And that was only to stop the level light flashing,as the dip stick level was fine.
I was worried when i first got the car, when i saw the pipes. But that was at 105k miles :D
