BROKEN XANTIA

My 1994 M Xantia 1.8i 8V broke down on friday night for seemingly no reason, I had petrol and a spark but It wouldnt go, now it spins over and makes a weird noise and looks that the cambelt has jumped but not snapped.

Has anyone had this happen before to them? Im now on the look out for a used head.

The cambelt may not have snapped, but it could well have stripped the teeth from the belt, this is very common on an old or oil contaminated belt.

Remove the top cover then get someone to briefly turn the key whilst you are looking at the camshaft pully, does it spin with the engine?? I guess not, in this case the belt has stripped.

Engine still turns over as I removed the cambelt top cover and the top pulley moves, it hasnt snapped but looks worn, we think its jumped and maybe bent the valves, the car was only cranking over to start when this happened and no theres no compression

Still worth trying a new belt.

Time everything up correct, put another belt on and try it.

It has been known to "get away with it"

The lack of compression may not be due to bent valves, it could only be due to the fact that your pistons are coming up whilst the valves are open.

Have ordered a new cambelt kit from citroen so will put that on and give it a whirl!

the only thing is if the cam belt has jumped or striped some teeth,every time you crank it over you are risking bending valves or more valves

True, will find out friday when we time it up and see what happens, if it starts and drives thats enough for me so at least I can get it home then save up and get the head done.

IN teh mean time if anyone has a spare 1.8 head let me know, I dont knwo if the one on the 2.0 is different if anyone cant let me know!
