Xantia Clutch Cable - What bill should I expect

Post by gadgetgricey »

Quite funny really I was going to post earlier in the week as the clutch cable was getting right to the top of its bite and I wondered if it could be adjusted.

Driving back from work this morning and clutch pedal straight to the floor, so I think clutch cable has snapped. :(

Is this an easy repair, and how much would I be expecting for a garage to charge for the repair.

Will ring a couple of garages tomorrow, just wanted to prepare myself for the worst.

Thanks

Dave

the chances are the cable is still in one peice but the little plastic clip that connects it to the pedal will have snapped.most likely caused by a worn/heavy clutch. do a search on this site for 'clutch cable clip' it should bring up loads.

I can only say, you will save quite a lot of money if you do it yourself!

Hmmm clutch pedal at the top.... how many miles has your clutch done?? I don't think you have an adjustable clutch cable so you may be in for a new clutch , 'new type' of clip and a new cable as well. Of course, all this can be accomplished by the owner/driver if competent/has the time/premises/tools/inclination etc etc

I've never done one on a Fiat but I suppose it is very similar #-o

The problem is with access to the pedal - cable connection. In the book it says you have to take the dashboard out, but it can be done by lying on the floor and getting your head under, but then you dont have room for your arms, in fact you may have to take the seat out, depending on how bendable you are, and garages charge by the hour!

hmmm methinks worst was the old escort mk3 'automatic' clutch adjuster (on top of the clutch pedal)......a job so fiddly that with the seat out on and you upside down in the car it can take hundreds of tries before you finally got lucky and it all went back together the way it should
