309 GRD water pump

Post by benclutts »

Hi - having fixed a leaky rubber hose to the heater matrix, the water pump is now continually leaking. Water is coming from behind the cog/pulley, so I wonder if it is the bearing seal that has gone.

At £18 for a new pump I guess replacement is the best fix = BUT it is driven by the timing belt!

1) Has anyone replaced the pump on theirs?
2) Did you have to remove the timing belt to do so - or is there a workaround?

Any help gratefully received
Cheers
Ben

Water pump failure on the XUD engine is not unknown. Yes you have to remove the timing belt. Yes, lots of people have done it! It's pretty straightforward on a non turbo unit. You may not even have to remove the crank pulley, but I think the room it will give to get the water pump out will be desirable, if not required! Haynes gives a pretty good description of this operation.

Come on Ben, get a book bought. They're as essential as a socket set. Plus, you'll never be a true car bore if you don't have a pile of 'em stacked up by the bed!
