C5 LX blower - full-on or nothing! - SOLVED

Hi guys,

I celebrate getting my 1st Citroen :) estate 2.0 HDi LX estate.

So, the reason for "celebration" is that blower fan either doesn't blow at all (positions 1-3) or blows full power (position 4).

Haynes manual is apparently not available yet for a C5, so asking the experienced guys: what do I do?

PS looked through the search results for "blower" - found nothing on a similar sympthoms with a C5

If it has three positions rather than being fully variable, it will have a resistor pack connected between the switch and motor, this is only to reduce the power to the motor at anything less than full speed when it will have the full 12 volts. So, the resistor pack will be faulty - unless it uses a transistor in the circuit., but I would go with the resistor pack first. Maybe someone looking will have a circuit diagram.

Peter, thanks for your reply!

I have seen a few electric diagrams posted here before, and it appears that mine uses a resistor. Also that's what the mechanic in a small garage has told me that I most likely need replaced. Quote for the resistor from the Citroen parts dept was 96 quid.

Does anyone know where this resistor is in the car?

6 is the pollen filter, 2 must be the resistor unit - should be easy enough to find / get out. Details for 2 (Part no / desc / ex VAT / inc VAT):

3 is the control module, which has the same part no as the non A/C cars for normal A/C - there's a different part no if it's got climate control:

Thanks a lot, mine is A/C but no CC, so the more expensive unit it is!

Can visit a scrapyard or knock-up a crude resistor replacement - I'll see after I make sure it's resistor failure!

At least I know what to look for!

If you can find out what value the resistors are you should be able to get a handful of wire wound resistors for a fiver. If the unit is dismantlable you will probably find that only one has gone.

That thought occured to me last night Peter - presumably the 3rd speed resistor is kaput, and as all are wired progressively in series, no fan on 1-2-3. Two options - replace the bust resistor with some of equal resistance, or bridge it out with (heavy gauge!) wire - which will give 2 fan speeds. I was trying to figure out what the resistance might be, but I got lost.... :roll:

Hi Richard

That was what I thought, only it gets a bit complicated as if you reduce the voltage across the motor its speed changes and therefore its resistance, so you have to start again! Assuming the motor draws 10 amps a resistor of 1 ohm would lose 10 volts, but because the motor is now drawing less current the voltate will go up! but I would think 1 or 2.2 ohms would be a good starting point.

Hi guys,

I have found that resistor location on Saturday, found a connector with plenty wires that is attached to where the resistor should be, although the connector looks a bit different from that on the picture.

Took the connector off, seen no way to pull the resistor out, so plugged it back in and turned it on hoping it was just a bad contact. Now I have speed 3 and 4 working :lol:

Hi all
Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but the links to the pics don't work.
I have a C5 with aircon and have purchased the blower motor resistor, but can't find it in the car!
Can anyone explain where it is please, as according to the Haynes manual it is under the glove box, but it isn't.

It's in the footwell.

If you have fully automatic A/C then it's in the RH footwell (Driver's side in UK) approximately in line wityh your left kneecap. Ypu'll have to remove some of the trim to get at it. It's held in with two 6mm head screws.

If it's the manual A/C it's in the LH (UK passenger) footwell roughly mirror image position to the other. This is probably what the Haynes means by under the glovebox.
