Xantia 2000 HDi 110 Cambelt

Post by RichardW »

Does anybody know what the cambelt interval is on a 2000 HDi 110 - 6yrs/72k or 10yrs/100k? I am thinking about going to look at one that's done about 65k, and just wondering if I should factor the change into the negotiations.

Meanwhile I have to change the glowplugs in the current TD so that I can get there

According to the handbook its 100K miles / 10 years - however given the cost of replacing the top end of that engine i would not be inclined to leave it more than the old (TD) interval of 72K miles.

I changed mine at 95,000 and the old belt was in very good condition - no cracking or significant wear - certainly in no immediate danger of breaking - I see no reason to disbelieve Citroens advice

Personaly, I would't leave a cambelt on any car much longer than 50'000 miles, regardless of what the manufacturer says.

Citroen reccomend 100'000 miles on the HDI but if you get one snap at 99'000, guess who's gonna foot the bill.

If I buy another car, first job to do when I get it home is cambelt, it's just a piece of mind thing.

How many Hdi's have you known that have broken a belt at 50,000 miles?

How many snap below 50'000 miles ??????

No HDI ones as far as I know, but as I said, this is just a personal thing for my own piece of mind.

The idea being to err on the side of safety, and change it before it breaks not cry afterwards.

I have known AX petrol engines to snap the belt below 25'000 miles, rare I know but still makes you puke when the service book says to leave it till 36'000.

Like I said the 50'000 mark is not a reccomendation, just a personal preference.

Slim.

Did the AX ones 'Just snap?' or was there some warning - like noisy tensioners? - if the owner owned up to ignoring the noises.

Sorry Slim - I didn't make my point very well - I don't disagree with changing belts earlier rather than later, I just think that to halve the manufacturers reccommended belt life on an engine that as far I am aware does not have a history of breaking belts is overcautious - perhaps its a view that will come back to haunt me in the future
