dead gearbox ??????

hi all ,
my brothers g reg 405 diesel has developed a loud banging +juddering from the front n/s only with the clutch out.it cant be driven. the rac said engine mounts , they are worn but on checking the gearbox oil, which it had plenty of, there were shards of metal coming out so im thinking he needs a new gearbox . anything else i should be checking - driveshafts,balljoints,wheelnuts all ok

Have you totally drained the oil to see what is floating around in there?
Just coming from one side would have me thinking possibly something in the final drive which would make it a fair bit cheaper to fix than an entire gearbox.
By completely draining and doing an "autopsy" on the oil, you'll be able to come to some conclusion depending on whether these shards are from gear teeth, bearings or housing & could be a guide to how serious it really is.
