Mr posty came today to deliver a parcel for the old man that I had to sign for. I was pottering on the ZX when he arrived. While I was checking over the box & signing the paperwork he took alook round the car asking what I was upto & said it looked like I had been busy, to which I agreed & I'll abit felt alittle chuffed that he took the time then he droped the biggest clanger of his life:

"Yeh nice mate its a Astra 'init?"

He left soon after.

Quite a faux pas...

BUT, even with it's 'subtle' kink giveaway in the midriff windowline don't be
too hard on Mr 'making polite smalltalk' Postman, it's not like there's any
clues for the layman who probably doesn't know the difference between
an Astra or a Daewoo either...

Don't go declaring all out hostilities on him though!!

In fact if you've nothing else better to do cover the grille/badge on ANY new
car picture you find and ask EVERYONE to say who made it - not as easy as
it sounds and the real reason the badges are getting beyond a silly caricature
of the original marque's identity. FFS, have you seen the size of the C3's new
chevrons!!

Nice one,

But I am surprised he didn't say -

" That must be one of those amphibious cars, cos it's got 2 props on the front" !!!

Hi I think that is very well put about identity, at one time it was possible to hear a car and know what it was and also see what it was but now because of wind tunnel testing (I guess) for making cars slippery for economy its difficult to know which is what any more. They all look the same to me. Still I think the postie was lucky not to be wearing a spare wheel as a hat!!
Unless you can afford to pay a very large sum to have something individguely different and special.
Welcome to blandland.
Cheers.

having spent a day working on my car by the roadside I can say that I can identify old Fords miles away! - Were pushrods this noisy 20 years ago when most used them? I recall the Talbot (Chrysler) Alpine and Horizon as being far noiser than the rest, and that Escorts etc were by and large quite quiet.

Has another skill been lost - the art of adjusting tappets? - Shame?
