struts moving

Post by fangy »

Hello,
I've just finished replacing the two front strut top on my Xantia, everything seems to have went ok, but I've got a strange question for you's, with the bonnet open, when you turn the steering left and right should the top of the struts move back and forward, the movement isn't a lot, one sphere points down while the other side points up, Is this normal? I've never really noticed before.
Thanks,
Fangy.

hi Fang I have seen this on a 405 and I thought it looked odd at first. In the end I couldnt find anything wrong. I think its supposed to do it.. Quite why is beyond me, the strut is vertical, straight, the base cant move..

someone else will know more

DON'T PANIC!! They're supposed to do that! A bit unnerving when you see it doing that the first time though...

The steering geometry on a Mcphereson strut is all on the p!ss and doesn't
permit the parallel movement of the wheel through it's vertical movement,
giving it a lean when it's steered from lock to lock and knackering up the
point of incidence of the wheel the the ground that is actually near perfect
on 'proper' double wishbone suspension (such as that found on the Gs, DS and Cx...).

Thanks for that, I was ready to start pulling it to bits to see what I'd done wrong.
