Motorway Breakdowns in France

Had reason to call on my breakdown insurance whilst returning from holiday in France last weekend and found out something that I was never aware of before.
Apparently any recovery from the motorway network is your responsibility to organise and cannot be arranged by your insurer ( although they will cover the costs ) . They will only get involved once you have been recovered to a garage off the motorway.
However I managed to sort out the problem before the truck arrived and legged-it sharpish before I got stung for the call-out charges.
