Front driver's Seat

Hi Gang,

Had a problem with my drivers seat for the past year

Just took seat out and found the one of the front mountings which was fixed to floor has sheared off

On closer examination the rear one directly behind is starting to go.

Going to weld a new piece of metal onto the subframe/floorpan and sort same.

Has anybody else had similair problems and their solutions would be of interest

Hmmm my Drivers seat as felt 'loose' for some time... i'll check in the morning

I found a broken front mounting on the driver's seat of my Xantia Activa.

Take a look at these photos I took.

As a fix I fabricated a saddle to sit over the cross member tunel.

I used mild steel plate from a shelf from an old storage unit at work.

I drilled and bolted it in place. It seems to work well. I drilled the original plate with the captive nut in it and fixed it to the top of the saddle. I could then bolt the seat back down when I'd finished.

I used a piece of cardboard as a pattern for the saddle. Cutting the cardboard to suit until it was a good fit.

Is your problem the same as mine ?

Hi Kev,

I've also got the cross member broken in the seat as per your description but also one of the seat for the 5 bolts which screw into the floorplan has sheared off

Well my seat seems to be OK, but after reading these posts, I am going to take a look at the seat(s) security, before I find that I've got a rocking chair too !

Does this problem only affect the drivers seat, I.E the seat with the most use ?

The break in my cross member looked like a brittle fracture. No bending, just snapping.

I thought it may have broken as a result of a shock load during a crash say. But theres no evidence of such a big trauma. I don't know what caused it.

Those pictures look just like my 1996 hatch did. I cut the required piece out of a scrap car in the breakers with a battery angle grinder and welded it into place over the top of my damaged cross member.

The answer to your questions is I don't know

Broken cross member on seat appears to happen but I don't know how regular.

Because the seatbelt is anchored to the seat base, this fault has the potential to turn a survivable crash into a fatality during a collision.

Repairs must be sound bearing in mind that a 14st person travelling at just 30 mph has a kinetic energy level of over 5000 ft lbs, thats a fair old bit of force for a seat belt and a few bolts to hold back, at 60 mph that figure rises to over 23000 ft lbs.

Hi Gang,

Just fixed seat and bolt mounting with a bit of a help from a friend.

Just for info one bolt is fixed and the other 4 can be adjusted as the securing nuts are can move a bit.

For once a fairly easy job to do
