hEAT IN THE red!!!

mycar's temperature made it all the way to the RED today. I stopped and noticed the fan was not on. I drove home later and the fan cut in at the normal temp.

What should I check......if anything???
Had (Saxo VTR 1999 (T) LPG converted - do not ask!!!)
Had (Xantia LX TD 1995 (M) 144,000 miles)
Had (Xantia TD Estate (N) 147,000 miles !)
NOW GOT Picasso 2.0HDi (02) 96,000 miles

If it was in the red when you were driving at a reasonable speed (30 mph or more) you have a cooling system problem, if its done much over 100k miles, probably the radiator. If you were in traffic when it happened its probably down to the cooling fans not working.
