Erm, when I first got my Xantia I couldnt believe the size of the tank (the fuel gauge saying 65ltrs) and it sure cost a bit more than the Zx diesel.

With a full tank I ranged from about 450 when the light came on (heavy foot) to about 550 when the red light use to come (so if empty easily 600 when i use to drive at 60mph on the A1)

It depends primarily on how you drive and in what sort of traffic conditions. I would have thought about 40 mpg to be the norm unless you live in London or have a heavy right foot. My XM has a 70 litre tank, very expensive to fill  but I can do from Devon to the far north of Scotland on that with some to spare. 600 - 900 miles is the sort of range I get but I live in a rural area and dont drive very fast or hard.

At a 60mph cruise, I can get about 680 miles from a tank (53 mpg) with my Xantia, speeding up to 70mph brings me down to about 620 miles (47 mpg). Thats my dailly commute on the A1 through traffic (sometimes start stop) and only putting about 60 litres in (stopping to fill up after the fuel light comes on). On the '94 Xantia I once put 65 litres in, I don't think there was a lot left in the tank on that occasion.

Driving only short distances in London I don't get very good mpg. I'd probably be better in a small petrol hatchback. But on the longer runs I'm able to do about 450miles on a tank.

Working on the assumpion that fuel weighs in at roughly 1kg per litre why would you want to run around the country with the equivalent of another (small) passenger in the car unless absolutely necessary? I use my 1.9 D Xsara as a Private Hire vehicle (mini cab) and rarely put more than £20 in it as its just a waste of fuel hauling those other 40kgs around all the time...also with todays fuel price volatility its not worth filling it up too much as the price has been yo-yo ing up and down and you could find you filled up and find it 2 days later at a reduced price. Only time mine gets a filling is if I'm abroad and returning home.

guess thats a good point
but its a drag sometimes queing up at petrol stations so most people just fill it up to the top when needed
my old van only takes £22 from empty so i dont have that problem :)

Pantherd - I dont think you would gain anything at all by changing to petrol, as a diesel uses less fuel when idling, which is probably what you are doing a lot of!

I always fill my tank and get between 500 and 550 miles on about 61 litres. It deosn't seem to matter how I drive altough it does a bit better on long runs.

Thats not too bad, i filled my old Xantia with 68 litres once. not cheap i tell you! and im sure i could have got anothe few litres out of the tank as well as it was only 1/2 way into the reserve section with the light on for the last 60 odd miles :)

It's not quite that bad, as fuel is 790g per litre. A full 65 litre tank weighs in at just over 50Kg which should make very little difference to fuel consumption.

And I'd rather drive a touch slower than have to fill up with fuel every other day. The time it takes to put a tank of fuel in seems an absolute age. Ok, it's only 5-or-so minutes, but when you have to do that 4 times a week it gets very irritating.

Hence I do a full tank every time. And get an average of 550 miles on 60 litres, which isn't bad considering that I'm either towing something heavy, or driving rather lead-footedly.
This is not a signature.

When you take the fuel cap off your tank, fuel vapour comes out. With a petrol, you sometimes see something like a heat haze coming out of the tank, thats petrol vapour escaping, petrol you've paid money for. Every time you fill up petrol escapes, no doubt you know how quickly a puddle of petrol will evaporate, its better to keep the tank sealed as much as possible!
