noisy turbo

guys,

i have a concern about my turbo... it seems to be whizzing a lot more than usual, before, you couldn't make out the whizzing until it started up at about 2000rpm, but now i hear it spinning up at about 1500rpm, all i do is touch the throttle and it you can hear it whizzing, on top of this i can hear it whizzing when i decelerate at low revs too (less than 2000)!

Thing is it pulls ok, just wondering if there is a leak or something somewhere, i can recall seeing puffs of smoke coming out of a crack near the catalytic converter last week (where the downpipe joins it unfortunately), could they be related, there is no sound of leaking exhaust before the cat.conv i guess it would be quite noisy, but the turbo seems to be whizzing a lot more than usual, any ideas?

The leak in your exhaust is quite likely to be related to your turbo noise as most of this 'noise' goes down the exhaust! The other possibility is the air intake connection to the turbo, if this is loose it could have the same effect.

ok thanks, i will check the air intake and see what the exhaust people say about the catalytic converter

I have owned a number of these cars and turbo noise has been different on each, my brother had a Volcane TD which sounded like a two tone siren

My current Xantia has a pronounced whistle, my old BX turbo uset to sound loud on cold mornings, I would check the exhaust though.
