2.0i Turbo Activa MPG

Post by LeeDJC »

I'm thinking about buying one of these. Have seen one, but whats the MPG like? I'm guessing at aroung 25 urban 30-35(maybe) on a run?

It's a 1997 model, so is there anything common which gives these ones grief?

I have a 406 2.0 turbo (same engine as the Activa).

My turbo let go around 100,000 miles. Replacements are expensive.

I get around 32mpg out of it, even when thrashing the *rse off it. My driving is completely mixed, so I can't really comment on long runs vs town driving.

It goes like stink, and upsets a lot of rep-mobiles. Puts a smile on my face every time.

From a full tank in both activa's i have had i get between 350-400 miles. Thats with aircon on too. You can get 40mpg if you stick at 56mph on the motorway (never doing that again!) Just expect an average of 28-30mpg.

Lots of people convert to LPG and there are a few knocking about as well already converted that i know of.

The turbos can be expensive but it depends how badly they go. if it lets go and you dont notice it will bugger the core and thats the pricey bit but if you keep your eyes open to the signs the turbo is on its way out then you could easily half the cost of it being repaired as often the seals can be replaced when the first warning signs of failure kick in :)

i don't understand why the turbo's go on them, they are low pressure after all, you will often hear about the 2.0 turbo refered to as CT (constant torque), it isn't a turbo to get massive accelearation really, it's there to keep the car going around corners (as you know, never come off the throttle on corners) therefore taking advantage of the activa suspension, and also for overtaking smoothly, a Xantia V6 would get similar fuel consumption and has 194bhp compared to 150bhp, and probably hydractive 2. I'd guess the V6 would eat an activa for breakfast.

Every Activa I've owned or driven took the p**s with fuel. Shame, because everything else was great.

If you drive it very very lightly I imagine they'd do ok. But I couldn't dawdle around in it, so it drank!

Hi Guys,

yeah your not getting great fuel economy .... However I guarantee the 2litre slugomatic petrol Xantia will get much the same fuel economy with a tiny fraction of the power :( You can't expect much better with a small petrol motor dragging around a heavy body (after all it weighs nearly as much as a CX !!).

'96 Xantia VSX slugomatic (sold !!)
and of course, lots of old Citroens, slowly rusting away in pieces ;)

My Activa returns 5.5 miles per litre more or less spot on. So If I put 30 litres in I can almost guarantee that I'll get 30x5.5=165 miles out of it.

If I take it easy I have got 6 or 6.5 miles per litre.

by the way. 1 gallon = 4.546 litres

5.5 x 4.546 = 25 mpg - my usual fuel consumption

6.5 x 4.546 = 29.5 mpg - taking it easy fuel consumption

The Activa is a pleasure to drive which outways in many respects the poor consumption.

cheers,

Kev

I dream of the day I can break 300 miles from one tank of fuel. My last check was 22 mpg  which was 267 miles. It is definitly the worst thing about the car.

Mines a 97 I think and have had no real problems with it a part from a burst LHM pipe in the centre of Toulouse, which could have been any Xantia.

If its as a main driver I personally would have a HDi any day, though a 97 activa is probably only worth 500 tops so that would save plenty for petrol.

You got your foot on the floor all the time? I have NEVER in the last year had less than 320 miles out of a full tank, and that was flooring the car. I'm going london, the dover and back home in next few days (from staffordshire) and i should be able to do that on tank and a half if that. Somthing is wrong with your engine. What fuel u putting in? Supermarket? Esso? BP?

I dont hang around  and the roads over here have ten times less traffic but even so. I put in french supermarket 95, and service the car as per the book.

Have you tried putting in non supermarket 98 RON? The manual for my Activa says 98 RON is what it should be running on.

hummm...it looks like there were no HDi Activas sold in the UK. Am I correct?

My Hdi can do around 1200km on a full 70 liter tank of diesel, if I do not go faster than 120km/h...

Yes  . If it weren't for the 2.0 Turbo's exspensive drinking habit, I'd have an Activa  The difference in fuel costs for me between that and an HDi is about the cost of a reasonable TD - per year!!!
