Xantia heater

Post by fatbugger »

Hi Everybody hope someone can help
My Wifes 94 Xantia 1.9tdsx has heater problems. That is to say it has no heat. Local garage wants to rip out dash and fit a new matrix but I am not convinced. If the fan is on very low there is luke warm air but as soon as it is speeded up the air goes stone cold. Heater hoses to and from matrix are both very hot so does this mean I have water flow through the matrix? There is no sign of water in the footwells so there does not seem to be a leak. The only thing I can find wrong is the heater slider to change from inside to outside airflow does not seem to operate. If slid from side to side it springs back to a central position and will not stay to the left or right. I presume it is not moving the attached flap.
Can anyone help please?
Regards
Mike

Rather than the matrix ( you are saying that the matrix and water pipes and getting hot) it sounds like theres a problem with the airflaps inside the dash that allow the distribution of hot and cold air.
Best plan is, if you are sure that the matrix and water pipes are hot, to turn the heater fan on full, and then "feel" around all the outlet vents for hot air. It could be, that if the flap is jambed, then its just diverting all the lovely heat out through the scuttle air intake and out into the outside world.
I think that most of the dash has to come out to look at heater cables and the flaps. Someone else may know better.

Thanks for info Jon
I suppose if dash has to come out for heater cables and flaps it would make good common sense to replace the matrix as well while it was all out.
Think I will entrust this one to the garage for repair bit beyond my limited DIY skills

I'm not looking forward to my first ever ( on any car ) DIY cambelt change, but I've got to do it soon <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
