Very chuffed with Xantia's MOT result!

Unread post by LeeDJC »

Just passed this week, only needing a replacement brake light bulb and the n/s headlight adjusting! Woohoo! And I expected it to fail on loads of "bits"

Just goes to show that they don't check strut tops, or at least they think mine are better than I do! Just about to replace these as they aint looking too good! All ordered, just waiting for Citroen now!

Be interesting to see what Citroen stores/spares department makes of a run on strut tops...

God, hope they've actually still got some!

have you checked my pics on the strut tops thread and mine had just passed an m.o.t 3 days before, it's a bit scary that they are not picking up on this, i'm all for getting my car passed it's m.o.t as cheaply as possible but i would rather that they pick up on something like this which is dangerous :D

andmcit,

Just in case, I contacted GSF to see if they planned to stock the strut tops in the near future. With many thousands of ageing Xantias around I reckoned they would sell quite a few. Got this reply:
".....Hi
Many thanks for the enquiry, unfortunately it doesn't look like we will bwe
doing these mounts, we don't get a lot of call for them.
Regards
Sales ........."

Not really surprising that they get little call for them if they don't stock them !

Looks like we will be stuck with having to pay stealer's prices.

Interesting - wonder if Pleiades have thoughts/plans/stock for this potentially large demand!? Other than the strut tops the cars are very durable and well put together so could last a good while...

Would be good if they did. I'm sure many more people would replace them instead of leaving them go and ultimately scrapping the car if the tops were cheaper. I'm not very happy about having to pay over £200 for them, but needs must!

Perhaps we should get onto them. Obviously if they thought there was a demand, they would seriously look into stocking these......bit late for me now though!

Hopefully, by raising awareness, there wont be so many dangerous unexpected failures. The downside I'd imagine will be some cars being scrapped due to the cost. If you equate it to once every 10 years or 100k miles as an overhead it isn't SO hideous. Could in fact be a way of buying in cheap an otherwise nice V6 or Activa!

What I do have concerns about is how long these will be available for - if the last new Xantia is a 2000 model does that mean there'll just be another 4 years worth of stock availability under the 10 years backup promise? I've seen many Citroen garages selling Xantia parts as redundant stock for no money on ebay to clear it out - so it doesn't go back to Coventry's Tile Hill depot.

Not sure if many people, Pleiades included, will want to get into manufacturing these even on an exchange basis - there's quite a bit to it the bonding of an improved thicker metal collar onto the rubber isn't the same as renewing seals in a hydraulic ram or steeering rack.

Wonder what the C5 has in terms of matching mountings etc?

To me It does make some sense to stock such an item if only because keeping the cars on the road ensures a steady trade for all the bits and pieces that we are constantly buying off them.

I have sent them (GSF) links to the relevant topics currently on here so they know there is some demand.

I'd bet that a good many here like Xantias so much we've more than one, with the GF/missus in the other one. I know a lot of Xantiae are going into the yards now, but what isn't clear is whether they've failed on the strut tops - the ones I've seen have had strut tops that are VERY manky mind.

It certainly wouldn't hurt GSF to have a few dozen and see how fast they go - sure there may be a short burst immediate damand as we're all at the same point of awareness that this is a Xantia Killer, but there are a lot of these out there commanding strong money on facelift models that will be in need in a few years time.

The hassle is stocking the hydractive /non hydractive, left/right saloon/estate etc variations - camn't keep everyone happy etc.

Purely personal conjecture, but I wonder whether it'd be worth concentrating on the hydractive one's - diehard nutter enthusiasts will want to keep a VSX/Exclusive/Athena/V6/Activa going for some time, whereas a base LX may been regarded by some as a hack just to run into the ground. BTW I'm not toally VSX biased as I run two very nice SX estates TOO!

Are the strut tops different for the different models ?
Can't see why they should be,

Yep they are different -

For starters : the sphere mount is part of the strut top (I know this is insane - but dont blame me  ) - this makes for 2 different pipe diameters - as the standard uses 3.5mm - the hydractive uses 10mm - piping.
8 species + the right side makes 16 different strut tops in total : (though some variant were not sold in UK)
