Clutch problems!

Post by yellowperyl »

Just had my tooth pulled out this afternoon, so as I had the rest of the day off work I decided to go to the local Citroen dealers to order a sensor that needs replacing, but when I got home my gears (manual gear box) seemed to be grinding abit especially when trying to select reverse, then while pushing the clutch pedal to the floor to find where the biting point was (thinking that it needed adjusting) the clutch pedal went to the floor and stayed there, even when I took my foot off it! The clutch cable seems to be ok but the clutch release lever feels loose, anyone got any ideas what the problem could be? Was thinking that maybe the clutch pressure plate finger springs are knackered, or possibly the clutch release bearing has given up as it has been abit noisy lately?

Its a bit hard to guesstimate eaxctly if the clutch - or just the cable may need replacement.

If the gearshifting has been increasingly noisy of lately - then its most likely caused by the clutch not disengaging fully - despite pedal well and surely pressed down.
This in turn can be caused by either the cable adjusting failing - or the release bearing grooving into the clucth spring plate - finally wearing off the spring finger tips.
This is diagnosed clearly by the clutch pedal getting a hard point to overcome - just before the biting point.

If you are sure the cable is working - then its a complete clutch renewal.

Thanks for your help, I've decided to send it to a clutch specialist recomended by my local garage. Hopefully this will be the end of my bad luck I seem to be having with my saxo lately!

hi sounds very much like release bearing problems... can you change a clutch yourself?

Hi jgra1, no I haven't got a garage or driveway to start removing the gearbox, so I've sent it to a clutch specialist, they quoted me £145 + vat which I thought was a good price, they collected my car today and recon it'll be ready tomorrow, so fingers crossed I'll be back behind the wheel by weekend!

Turned out to be a little more serious than I thought, the clutch specialist said that it looked like the clutch release bearing had exploded, and the clutch release fork was nearly bent in half! I guess that'll teach me for ignoring the noisy clutch release bearing for such a long time. Still back on the road now, although £265 lighter.
