Xantia Blower motor/ ABS

Post by Allanxantia »

Have been doing a little more investigation. My new car is a 97 Xantia with air con. The blower seems very weak. It works on all speeds but does not seem as powerful as the one on my old non air con car. The air con needs re-gassing but I'm not bothered unless that is something to do with the weak fan.

The car also has ABS as the ECU and control unit are there but seems to be disconnected as it does not work and there are no warning lights. Is it possible to disconnect it?

The air-conditioned Xantia has a pollen filter that gets dirty and restricts the airflow.
Nothing to do with the need to re-gas.
The filter can be washed.

Mine seemed a bit weak and upon investigation I discovered some burk had been messing with the slider controls, which did not seem much at first. However, I straightened the cables out and put cable clips on so that the flaps for air circulation would work properly. Result very powrful fan!

Have you tried shutting the vents for air to face only and if there is any air coming out of the footwell vents, if there is you might have the same problem as mine.

Checking the controls on the slider is easy, just remove two screws holding the radio fascia surround and shine a torch in. Maybe it will be easy for you, who knows.

I'll try removing the pollen filter tonight and report back. Had forgotten about these!

Well done. The pollen filter was really really clogged. when I took it out loads of bits of leaves and dust came out. Rather than cleaning it I have just removed it for the time being. The ABS seems to have just had the warning light removed from the dash panel, to get through the MOT I presume. Is it safe to drive like this?

Its totally safe to drive, as safe as a car with non ABS is. It would however be nice to know at the time if the ABS is currently working so you know in advanced if the wheels will lock or not.

The purpose of the pollen filter is to keep the leaf matter out of the evaporator.
A short time without filter won’t cause any harm.

Delayed reaction about the ABS.
There is a fuse to remove to put the ABS out of commission.
The fuse number depends on the model.
BOL mentions F6 10 Amps under dash, and F1 20 Amps under bonnet for Xantia 1993-1995.
The MOT dash warning light test sequence needs all lights fitted to come on.
Hope your MOT man won’t have seen  that the ABS lamp doesn’t work.

I can live without ABS, but will it pass MOT without it? Seems a bizarre situation

That is what I would like to know  Well my BIL at least.

If the ECU displays a fault then surely thats a fail!
If theres no warning light being displayed and no faults are checked then surely its a pass!

Depends if all garages now have to check cars with ECU's, I'm sure certain garages do not
