How to eliminate 'dog' smell from my new Xantia

Post by Garysz »

With this recent improvement in the weather, after a long hot day in the car park, my new to me, Xantia smells like a kennel! The previous owner obviously had a dog(s).

I have thoroughly vacuumed the carpets and seats. The odor must be impregnated. The air freshener is only effective for a few days when new. I've tried the Oust product for the home but to no avail.

Can any one suggest a solution to get rid of this smell?

Gary,

If it's 'heavy duty' dog smell you've got 2 options.

1 - Sell the car
2 - Rip out anything made of carpet or fabric and replace. Ingrained dog smell is impossible to shift.

If the smell is more of a light background aroma you may want to hire a 'Rug Doctor' from your local Focus or Homebase. You will have to buy their proprietry cleaning fluids to go with it, one of which is a carpet / fabric deodoriser. This machine is the muts nuts and If it doesn't work, nothing will.

Agree with Gammy, but before shelling out on the hire of a rug doctor, buy a bottle of the rug doctor odour eliminator, mix it as per instructions and apply with a plant spray to the carpets etc. This may solve the problem, if not then a full cleaning will be needed.

Just a passing thought as someone who owns a large and often wet dog -when the aircon needs cleaning and disinfecting the whole car really stinks and that is over and above the doggy smell. Change the filter and clean the system through with a spray deodourant disinfectant for air con.

I normally do all work myself, but it could be worth paying ? £30 to a professional valeter and get them to do inside only, using their strongest stuff on seats?

Hi there,

Ive got a BETTER solution

Since I own a dog try this , there is a commercial product called Simple Solution which disposes of all odours by using enzymes to 'eat' the organic matter.
I swear by it and a1/2 litre bottle costs about £5.

It can be used on anything which has had anything organic spilt dropped etc on it

When my kids were younger and sick in car I used this to get rid of the smell etc.

Hope this is useful for everyone out there

Cheers

Can you suggest where I might buy it? I've not seen it in Tesco's - is it a pet shop product?

My mates fiesta was previously owned by a dog owner and these seats were awful, urine stains and all (why he bought the car i'll never know, well if you knew him you'd understand :? )

He spent some money on a valet and the seats are like brand new, worth every penny spent.

However my Xantia's boot stank of wet dog and was covered in hairs too....no amount of sprays helped but what did work was a tub of brand new oil which spilled out into the boot by accident, it completely got rid of the dog smell, however replacing it with an oily smell

But I know which one I prefer :D

My mate has a 51 reg Megane coupe which his dad owned and sold on to him, their dog has been dead for about 3 years but his car still stinks of the dog, he doesnt even notice it but it bloody stinks of it. Apparently his dad used to put the dog in the boot and fold down the back seats. Ive told him to get it valeted but he's happy in his dog stench filled world!

Hi there gang,

Re this solution any pet shop or store will stock this or
if you have a friend who works for the elderly this is a product
they use also.

Cheers

I had the same problem when taking ownership of the estate. A swift change of interior helped!
