.....popular person on the board  I thought I should try my luck at getting away with this.

The other half is thinking about getting a Peugeot 106 for when she passes her test (dont ask!), so im after some general thoughts and opinions regarding these cars.

I am certainly going to suggest a diesel to her rather than petrol, but if you lot out there can convince me their a bag of poo that will give me some hope of making her purchase a Diesel ZX

Nah she hates the AX and Saxo (I wouldnt let her have a Saxo), I would be more than happy for her to have a ZX  (I would certainly put myself on the insurance for me to drive).

Shes a woman which is her downfall and that means, what she wants she will have despite what I suggest

If you go for a 106/Saxo make sure its got power steering - many haven't

1.4 diesels are aluminium engines and have a reputation of blowing gaskets (I don't know if this is justfied.) 1.5's should have an iron block and are supposed to be better.

Some 106's suffer from rust in the front chassis.

ZX has a very poor steering lock and can be clumsy to park. Did you realise that a ZX is actually as heavy or heavier than a BX and wider? Having said that my wife still loves her ZX 1.9D after 3.5 years (and calls it 'Precious')

In Avantage trim you get things like electric sunroofs, central loocking, electric windows - so you may be able to swing it on the toys!

The 1.5 is a mix of cast iron block / ally head with of course different expansion and contraction rates, which is a 'bad thing'. The 1.4 being all ally is a 'good thing'. The most important thing is to do everything to both engines to prevent head gasket failure i.e. regular coolant flushes, distilled water coolant, DO NOT ALLOW TO OVERHEAT (which is difficult with no temp gauge). I prefer the 1.4 because it is lighter and seems more 'pure' somehow.

Well now the summers finally here could you not temp her with something thats got aircon. Early Xsara's are easy to pick up now, they handle like ZX's but have all the toys and are cheap as chips.

She has no money so needs something that will be very very cheap to fix if something went wrong (or easier enough for me to have a go), somehow a Xsara is just getting a little bit beyond her financial wise.

Don't wish to be rude but how can anyone aspire to owning a ZX? Citroens answer to the Vauxhall Astra but without the style...ouch.

Citroen have produced some stunningly designed vehicles over the years but the ZX certainly wasn't one of them.

I think mezuk04 does not aspire to own a zx however finances decide.
The two TD ZX's I've owned served me well and for the cash you will not find a better car. Thought about a Xantia for her?

I like the 'utilitarian' appeal of the ZX compared to a Xantia... personally I would have the most basic model and 'go back to basics' for cheap trouble free (?) motoring.

But I bet if you found a 306 she would have it not problem. You could always take her for a spin in Saxo, AX then have a go in ZXTD that should do the trick.

Just one thought about a 106/Saxo/AX - yes they're cheap but given their strength in a crash, would you really want an inexperienced driver to suffer a smash in one?

Steer her towards something bigger. A late 1.4 ZX in metallic silver?? Cheap tax, economical, airbag etc, and tell her that single wiper is pure Gallic style. :D
