Hi,
My timing belt snapped on my 1.9td Xantia recently
Its got 10 months MOT left on it so am considering doing an engine swap.
Has anyone got any tips/tricks when swapping the engine? Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have done a petrol engine in the dim & distant past but never a citroen diesel - What do i need to do with the hydraulics before the engine comes out?
Cheers
1.9 td engine swap

You do have the alternative to repair the engine.
Considered the huge job it is to replace an engine - and tools/facilities necessary - it may well be more attractive to repair the engine.
You need :
new cambelt
headbolts set
headgasket
prooven good TD head
The unknown variable here is the cost of the TD head. A new or recon head will most likely be more than a good complete s/h engine. But still consider the amount of work involved.
Has the cam sheared in the head ?

Jasper I have to agree, engine swap...
you can get a decent motor for £50-100 all in, and the job is a weekends work...
my feelng now after doing a couple of these would be to drop the engine down and lift the car off it with a hoist.
get the exhaust out of the way from the car, same with drive shafts ( remove from hubs) maybe even remove manifolds.
there are very few wires or pipes on these engine compared to petrol and modern engines
get rid of most ancilleries.
i am tipsy so forgive me but, this shuold be quite straightforward....

ps if you need a good crane use mine, Sussex

I agree! Even with a replacement engine... you still need a new timing belt/water pump/possible imminent HG failure. My head came back from Motorcast 01939 236000 like new for £180.0 ready to put back on, they even supplied all gaskets/bolts etcAndersDK wrote:You do have the alternative to repair the engine.

However, if you decide to go down the replacement engine route.... I have one from a 'P' reg that is taking up space at the moment!! (complete with gearbox) if you are interested.

Thing is, that to do that much repair work on the engine, it would be faster and easier to remove the engine to do it... I'll almost always pull the engine to do a TD head now... it saves an awful lot of skinned knuckles. Also means the cambelt change is 20 minutes rather than 4 hours.AndersDK wrote:You do have the alternative to repair the engine.

This is not a signature.
Good point... If I had the necessary equipment available I would definately consider whipping the engine out next time.... even just to save the wear and tear on my back! This is no small unit by the way.... 4 blokes struggle to lift my spare. Oh and I would certainly feel happier about setting things up (t/belt etc) with the engine on a bench.fastandfurryous wrote: Thing is, that to do that much repair work on the engine, it would be faster and easier to remove the engine to do it...
