Peugeot 406 1.9dt R reg engine fault

Unread post by rich201283 »

My engine has sudenly lost power, losts of smoke and sounds like it missing, I have checked engine sensors, Put it into peugeot and it came back with a fault with the pump, Got a 2nd hand pump put it on(same problem) What i did notice there was a lot of oil gunge in the inlet manifold, iTS NOT OFF THE TURBO AS THIS IS OKAY, I think its a valve or a piston ring

Anybody had this kind of problem with valves or rings?

black gunge crap in inlet manifold is normal on that engine i think a lot of it is created by the egr system on the engine, your fault does sound terminal i would get a compresion test done on the engine first

This sounds like basic fuel starvation to me...

I had the fault code read by peugeot and it came back as , start of injection fault, I have noticed that when i flick the ignition key off then on while its running it wil rev up as normal an the is will go sluggish and smokey and the k light comes on, it cant be the fuel pump coz i have put another one on,

I have thought it may be a relay or ecu since when i flick it on/off while running it revs up ok for a second

ANY IDEAS IF A BLOCKED CAT WOULD CAUSE THIS PROBLEM???????

My second option would be rings

ANY IDEAS ON THIS AS IM AT THE END OF MY TETHER WITH I?

Start of injection fault doesn't necessarily mean a fault with the pump, what sensors have you checked and how have you checked them.

i have unpluged the crank position sensor and the lift sensor on the pump one at a time and the rev counter still works, I will say that the car was overfilled with oil about a year a go, would this have cause the oil in the inlet and blocked the cat over time, ?

hmm.... now beginning to think this could be a failed injector lift sensor.

The injector with a teeny-tiny little wire going into it has a needle lift sensor in it. If this fails, the injection timing will be miles out.

That's fairly irrelevant, as the rev-counter has it's own sensor on the flywheel. (I believe)

no, and no. The inlet manifold is caked in goop because of your spawn-of-satan EGR valve.

If you can unplug the needle lift sensor from the injection pump, and there's no difference in the running, then you have found your fault. Unplugging this sensor should make the engine run rough-as-nuts. It's already running rough-as-nuts, and unplugging the sensor makes no difference..........

When you say "lift sensor on the pump" I assume you mean the injector lift sensor.

What did you notice (if anything) about the engine note when each of these sensors were unplugged.

What happens when both are unplugged.

Overfilling with oil is unlikely to cause you problems a year down the line, any problem should have been aparent there and then, there might have been some misting and this might have put some oil into the intake, but it wouldn't have gone down the exhaust in that form because it has to go through the cylinders, and there it would simply have burnt.

When i unplug the lift sensor on the injector it runs the same, Ifind it hard to start when it is pugged into the pump,

Is there anyway of testing this sensor?

I think you just tested it, didn't you?

start of injection, ecu will calculate what advance is required at a given engine speed and load and will adjust advance regulator in pump, then it will look at needle lift signal on injector to confirm actual advance .if out will correct but will only correct so far if way out of its limits will record a fault.check your timing belt is set and all locking pins fit in cam and pump when at tdc. your pump is adjustable on its fixings you should have 0.66mm lift on pump at tdc this is then set correctly(dti in back of pump). if that all ok then check wiring to injector and injector. your injector i think should be in cylinder no 3.

THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM!!!!

I don't think that static lift measurement is valid on a Lucas EPIC system.

After all, the whole reason that the system was introduced was to avoid the need to time the pump to the engine. You just shove it on in roughly the right place, and the electronics deal with the precise timing. Cheaper to use a box-o-electronics than it is to pay a man to time every engine that's manufactured. The electronics probably cost peanuts to the manufacturer, and save them many many man-hours.

only the 2.1 dt had the lucas epic system. all the 1.9 td have the bosch vp20 system which is like a normal injection pump but with electronic advance control.this bloke has a 1.9 td and you do have to static time the pump if it has been removed

I have just had the sensor on the injector tested and it has came back okay. Which othere sensors will feed to the ecu and make a big inpact on the running of the care.

All i can think of is one of the sensors have gone or the ecu ha gone faulty .
