I already posted this on the Citroen forum but go no replies so apologies to those who inhabit both forums.
Anyone have any luck in using a pc based eobd/obd2 scanner on a pre 2003 car with a HDI engine? Diesels didnt have to be complient until 2004 or so but some forums report that some of them are. I believe that the HDI with the edc15 ecu can be interrogated but there is some trick in initialising the interface. I also believe that the L line is used while many vehicles use only the K line.
Can anyone reccomend a tool which works on the HDI & can read & clear faults and also display live data
Thanks

Hi,
I've just got a 1999 (September) Peugeot 406 HDI 90 and this looks interesting...
are you saying that I can get an interface (cable/plug?) and some software to run on my laptop to gain access to the in-car diagnostics?
What sort of prices and where from please?
Can you give me a basic run-through on what's involved when connecting up and what I'd be able to see and change?
Regards
Peter

Try the following sites
http://www.andywhittaker.com/ecu/obdii_hardware.htm
http://www.onboarddiagnostics.co.uk/dia ... eobd_tool/
http://www.digimoto.com
There are 2 main types of interface
1. optocoupled, using optocouplers to provide electrical isolation between the car & the laptop. More refined models also use the MAX232 chip to give proper rs232 levels to the laptop. The pc does all the work & the software used sets data rates on the serial port etc. A suitable diagnostic program is VagCom which is specifically written for VW vehicles but will work on other eobd/obd2 compliant vehicles. Release 311.2 is the last release which works with the opto cables & can be downloaded free from http://www.ross-tech.com/
2. ELM based. These use a programmed pic microprocessor to interface between the pc & the car. several diagnostic programs are available for download either free or for a small fee. The lead is usually supplied with a freeware version of a diagnostic program.
With these you can read & fault codes & clear them from the ecu thus extinguishing the fault lamp on the dash. You can also read or record live data from the engine which helps in diagnosing the problem
There are several other sites & suppliers out there
