V6 Xantia Sliding

Post by DHallworth »

I was out in my V6 Xantia last night, and on entering a round about with a very slight bend doing 35 tops, i felt the front of the Xantia understeer, upon straightening up the back end kicked right out.

I rolled the steering right round and fought it, and floored it at the same time, and i got it back. But what the hell could of caused it doing 35?

It has been dry for a few days then raining last night, but i've done that roundabout in the wet in my 306 doing 55 before.

All 4 tyres on it are brand new Pirelli P6000's, which i have been told aren't up to much in the wet, but i wouldn't expect that from tyres for £29!!!!

I have noticed after flooring it from a sliproad or something, on over run it feels like the suspension at the back is on highest, almost as if the front is sloaping down, and the brakes tend to feel as if they are suffering brake fade aswell.

I had the accumulator changed on Friday aswell, but this hasn't made any difference.

Dunno if these could be related or not?

Anything i should look out for?

Cheers
David.

I am running the same tyres as you on my V6 and have no problem they stick like s**t to a blanket. Perhaps their was a little diesel spillage on the roundabout!!!!!!!!!

That was my first thought too. Wet road after a long dry spell, and/or diesel spill. Diesel+water=slide...

i kinda hope that was diesel on the road that caused it.

I'd be worried if it wasn't as there is no way a car with over 5.5mm of tread on each corner should slide doing 35 without oil on the road!!

I have heard mixed reviews of the P6000's, on teh 306Gti owners club they say they are great in the dry, and crap in the wet, i know mine did spin slightly whilst leaving a set of lights last night, but i did try to make it spin that time to see if the tyres were as bad as everyone says after the slide incident, (was in a massive straight line) and i didn't even take the thing above 3000rpm.

My dad has Michelin Pilot Primacys on his 406 V6 Coupé, and i think when the Xantia needs tyres i might well swap to them as i know the tyres on his coupe grip very well.

Thanks for the advice guys.
David.

That's pretty much what I would expect from a patch of low grip surface such as a diesel spill, or even just the usual greasy road you get when it rains after a dry spell.

I don’t think people appreciate just how much harm diesel spills cause even a small leak can be deadly as diesel was the main reason I wrote off my C5 and the 1st thing the police said was It wouldn’t make any difference what speed I had of been doing (thankfully I was going slow anyway)

I wouldn’t mind the police had a report of a tractor leaking/spilling fuel shortly before my accident but since they cant trace it my insurance blames me ( bang goes the NCD)

Pirelli P6000s

What do you expect fitting those

What a load of F*****G W**K S***E

The only time you should fit a P6000 is if you have a Volvo V70 with 17 " alloys on & its a front tyre because other brands of tyre rub on the bodywork

If you have 16" rims or bigger get the NEW Michelin Primacey HP

Like the Pilot Primacey but MUCH better

Michelin is also now keeping the Pilot brand for its sporty range of tyres so the new Primacey wont be called a Pilot.

My V6 has got Pilot Premacy's all round. No handling problems there AT ALL.

It goes round corners exceptionally well for a non Activa Xantia.

It just doesnt have the steering feel that a BX gives

Talking about the Pirelli P6000...
I just made the mistake of putting two at the front of my Activa, and I must say, the tyres are really very bad!!! I have almost no grip, dry or wet.... Very bad idea! I have no polite words to describe how dissapointed I am.

Many people say these tyres are fine...so I dont understand it...could it be that there are grades A and B of the same tyre? Are my tyres just old and the rubber turned to plastic or something?

if the tyres were brand new maybe they still needed bedding in, you won't get the best grip until they've done about 200 miles.

I had new tyres on my old bmw once, and i took a corner i do everyday and it just slid diagonally towards the wall (didn't crash it though), i couldn't work out why until i realised the tyres were 2 days old.

maybe the roundabout you talk about had just been resurfaced too, new tarmac needs to be worn down a little before drivers get the best grip on them, other than that it could just be diesel or oil etc

Hi I can't say what the 6000's are like on the Xantia because I have Mich's on but I did find that the 6000's on a XM I had were not that good in the wet although they were pretty good wear wise.
Cheers. Geoff.

i didn't fit them to it personally, i bought the car with 4 brand new ones on it. They have done at least 600 miles for me.

The roundabout i was definately hasn't just been surfaced, but i did try and get it sideways off our local roundabout tonight, and it refused to budge. Which i was quite pleased about.

Wet road after dry spell = poor adhesion
