Crack/clonk when I hit a speed bump

Post by Jshodgson »

When I drive over speed bumps (the ones you can straddle but I've been told not to as it ruins your tyres and tracking) with the right tyres it is fine. When I do the same with the left side there is a cracking/clonking noise that sounds painful!!

Any ideas greatly recieved.

This is rubbish

The problem is most likely to be worn droplinks. Could also be worn wishbone bushes, but droplinks are the most likely problem.

ruin your tyres and tracking.... rubbish indeed.

now hitting them too fast may stress the suspension out or worse blow something internally, at the worse a knackered membrane in a sphere maybe (if we are talking hydractive here).

I think your lower balljoint may be knackered. If the droplinks were to blame, it would clunk no matter which tyre touched the bump, as the antirollbar is connected to both sides of the suspension

thanks

is there any visible signs I can look for to show that the lower ball joint is knackered?

Raise the offending side and grasp the wheel by the top and bottom and rock it.

If the lower balljoint is gone, there should be some freeplay in the vertical axis.
