Renault Megane misfire
Renault Megane 1.6 Sport with a misfiring problem that comes and goes without any warning. Yesterday it started out fine then was only firing on 2 and 3, today it's fine again. Temperature makes no difference. Been like this for a few days and shows no sign of changing. One of the coils was replaced last year after a dramatic failure and at first these were suspected, but BOTH coils intermittant at the same time? Think not, so what are your suggestions to look for?

My 1.6 RTe had a misfire a year or so ago...turned out it was the head gasket. Try taking the suspect plug lead off, starting the engine and arcing it to the head or block. If it sparks, you know the coil is ok.
I spent loads...new plugs, battery, leads, etc. Eventually took the plug out and started it up. Plume of coolant shot out of the hole.
Got it sorted at Bill Quay Autos in Pelaw, Gateshed for £190, inc skimming and checking the water pump. Not too bad really.

Defo sounds like the coils again. Classic Renault fault. As per instructions take off each plug coil and start up see if this has any change. H/G may be accompanied with coolant lose, over heating when sat in traffic but not while moving, that kind of thing. It could also be that the HT leads have become cracked and are now arching to the body or engine. Double check plugs to see if thy'er OK as well.
The wifes got a C4 I've got a ZX TD SX!!!!

Must admit I didn't notice the temp gauge going higher than normal on idle. Main problem was starting in the morning...guess spark plugs don't like a pot full of coolant!
In my case I traced the problem back to the bleed screw on one of the hoses.
Still, at least it's not a Renault 11 GTX 1.7. My fatha had so much trouble with that!
