how do you tell a TD is a TD

Post by Jshodgson »

My LX TD looked different under the bonnet to my new TD Estate. I have also noticed a difference in power but put that down to the extra weight of the estate.

How do I check that I have actually got a Turbo? Also would a duff glow plug produce poorer performance? They changed all but the most difficult one back in November....... :-({|=

Follow the pipe from the air filter, instead of going straight to the inlet manifold, it should dissapear round the back of the engine to the turbo and the output from the turbo will go to the intercooler, which I believe on the Xantia is in front of the radiator. A pipe will then go from there to the inlet manifold.

As rossnunn says : put your foot to the floor, when you reach about 2,000 rpm, you should feel it really go.

It is possible that you have a turbo but its not working. Check first and then come back here.

You should certainly notice the difference from a non turbo as the power should be about 30% up.

As far as i know,Citroen never made a non turbo diesel estate.Only the early hatchbacks were 1.9D non turbo,& later 1.9 SD low presure turbo. All estates were turbo intercooled.Well,in the UK anyway.
The glowplug should make no difference, only when starting.
I can change the glow plug behind the fuel pump in about 20 mins now, with my selection of adapted spanners  ,IE bent with a bloody big hammer! :D
You should take me up on my offer,i could do the glowplug for you as well   :D

Yes Peter N,the inercooler is in front of the rad.Looking from the front of the car,air con rad first,if fitted, then intercooler, then the rad in front of the engine. The intercooler will have a rectangle ish pipe going in sidways on each side of the i/cooler.
Interestinly, the Hanyes book makes reference to a top mounted i/cooler on top of the engine, but i`m not sure about that on the Xantia`s.

Mind, there's probably more than 10 differences and there's NO PRIZE!!

Hope this helps!

I thought you could tell by the colour of the battery.

What colour is it in the hdi ?

And for pug owners - if you've got what looks like a radiator with a rubber surround on top of your engine - that's the intercooler, so you should have a turbo ( unless someone fitted it just for the looks  )

I believe that 'early' intercooled turbo's had top mounted intercoolers, cool air being transferred along the bonnet reinforcing channels.

Thats what I was wondering, if it was like the BX, with the intercooler on top, but, from the photographs, obviously not. So,

jshodgson : If you think the turbo is not working, check the 1/2" rubber tube that is connected to the pressure regulator looking thing on top of the pump, make sure it is connected both ends, as thats what senses the boost pressure and increases the fuel delivery from the pump.

You can check the turbo by disconnecting the pipe from the inlet manifold and revving the engine, you should have a strong draught from the pipe.

I don't think any of the Xantia's had the intercooler on the top...

My mums early 1993 1.9TD (which is so early it doesn't even have anti-sink) still has a front mounted intercooler...

Some Xantia estates were sold on fuel economy, the fuelling and boost is significantly less than the hatch models, it is straightforward enough to increase this if it feels sluggish, I have never seen a Xantia with a top mounted intercooler, some TD Xantias had no intercooler :? and a right waste of time they were.

Hi Stewart

All Xantia TD's were inter cooled, and there were hand full of N/a diesels.
Same with 306's, all turbos were intercooled.. It was slightly more efficient to intercool the 'compressed' air in the inlet.

Its the older BX and 205/309 cars that count. The BX TD's were all intercooled bit the 205/309 were never inter cooled..

Of course from factory, and UK..
If anyone has a shot of a NON intercooled xantia - LATER SD models excluded, it would be nice to see.

It looks like it is definately a TD. I did find one of the pipes coming off the fuel pump area and going in to one the large plastic pipes (air ?) was peroshed and had a large hole in it. I have cut it down and fixed it back on witha jubilee clip. I'll take it out latre to see if there is any difference.

Assuming that's the pipe to goes onto the top of the pump, this is the sensor tube that connects to the boost compensator on the pump and tells it dump more fuel in when the boost comes up.

I think you will find a difference when you take it out
