xantia clutch and pollen filter

Post by jgra1 »

Well, the TD has its new clutch, EBC @ £55 all in. Slightly heavy but smooth and works fine, glad to have that done. Took 3 hours to refit, and 1.5 hours to remove. I think thats about as good as i can do alone..

Silly question now.. I may be able to do any number of tough jobs on cars, but i am buggered if I can get to my pollen filter on my '99 1.8i Xant..
;)
It sits behind/under a flat panel, this plastic panel has holes for wiper shafts etc, and joins into windscsreen surround.. before i end up smashing the screen, whats the trick, if feels very tight at that point?

The pollen filter is found behind the glove box. Remove the felt underneath the glovebox then (depnding on which type is fitted) either slide the cover off or remove the screws and the pollen filter pulls downwards.

Are you saying you replaced the clutch on your Xantia in 4 1/2 hours in total? If so I'm impressed :o

I'm with you on the pollen filter... I spent half an hour last Saturday trying to find the screws/slide mechanism with no joy. I reckon they changed the design after 98/99. It must be in the boot I think

Practice makes perfect eh!? Does the car have all the ABS kit on the nearside getting in the way? Guess it's not hoisted out, but tackled through the nearside wheel arch then?

yes has ABS.. but to be honest this isnt in the way.. there is only one tough job with a clutch change on these cars, I have found, especially when working alone.

I am hoisting the box up from the ground, using a crane above the engine, coming over the LH wing, and the gearbox is such a tight fit! you have to pull it up, then engine has to be at the correct height, and the gearbox needs kind of rotating thru its lift... ok with a helper, but takes me 30 mins to physically mate the two items together :(

really not a tough job tho....

garages quote 9 hours for it too...

Andrew in answer,
almost all work is done from above, the only work i do from LH side weelarch is oil filling and Driveshaft/wheel removal (which needs to be done on both sides) - seperate bottom ball joints, and track rod end joints...

The gearbox is only held to the engine with 3-4 bolts.... starter motor accounts for another 3

Underneath work includes, intermediate RH driveshaft Bearing (2 10mm nuts), one allen bolt for engine to gearbox, flywheel half-cover (3 10mm bolts) and maybe clutch removal.

Everything is else from above...

Well, I hope they haven't done that yet. :)
This topic has 2 photos at the bottom showing where it's meant to be on the Mk II, with sliding cover:

The post I have in this topic has a link to a French site that shows pictures of the Xsara filter removal, with talk in the French text of the sliding cover with still one screw in it:
