help please: car remote won't reprogramme

car is 1996 xantia with IR two button remote locking

My current remote had stopped working. So ive brought a new one. Both the light on the side and the front light up brightly so the new remote is fine. Also i think the receiver is ok as the old remote worked fine, before it went haywire.

Ive tried the following but it wont work

1) Switch ignition with spare key to 2nd turn where all the lights come on the dash
2) Aim remote at dome, press the button for circa 30sesc.
3) Switch off ignition
4) Open door then close
5) Try new fob is should be reprogrammed, but it isn’t

Any advice please as i am totally baffled

Quick update: its working now

I did the above again, the only difference being the plip was now touching the dome, and I aimed from the front of the dome.

central locking, alarm and deadlocks all great now, before someone says no the alarm (car alarm that is) does not go off at 3am.
