knocking from top end after service after garage

Unread post by visagti »

This is a post on behalf of my dad.

He has a 306 Y plate hdi estate 50k and full dealer history.

This service though because of the wait at main dealer he took the car to very well known garage for a std service.

He got the car back and drove it for 1 week before he heard a knocking from the top end (that's where it sounds like it's coming from).

He checked the oil level and it was off the bottom of the dip stick. He assumed they hadn't filled the oil level up full after service so took it straight to the garage and they said it was ok when it left but it now requires new engine?

I know it's not a lot of info and you really have to see the car to judge but does anyone think it may be because of the lack of oil put back into the car or if not what it may be. Have these engines had any problems over the years from top end or oil pick up?

Any help would be most appreciated

The only time a HDI will drink oil is the first 10K miles as its running in.

After that they should use little if any oil unless its neglected & not serviced.

Does this 306 have the oil level gauge on the dash that shows up on the pre start check?

Car serviced every 6000 miles ish so always been looked after.

I will have to ask him about the gauge. Is it a needle type or warning light?

Gauge depends on year & spec of 306.

Ask him to look in the owners handbook to see what type of oil level gauge ( if any ) is fitted.

Very difficult situation. If the garage have used the wrong oil and it's burnt it off that you could prove that at the sump has still got the oil in it. If they underfilled it and the car was driven for a week the garage will declare you have no comeback. How many miles did it do in the one week, that may strengthen you case. Regards Peter

He has used it about town only, he thinks approx quarter of a tank of fuel.

So get the garage to explain how the engine can use 2 lts of oil in 100 miles. Smoke would be pouring out. When they serviced it they recorded the mileage and if they still blag you then contact your local trading standards. You will need to prove the mileage now so go to the pug agents and ask their service manager to declare time and date of mileage.

Regards and Good Luck. Peter

My dad has taken it to a garage I use and has found out they put engine flush in it and forgot to empty and put oil in. It has evaporated hense low on dip stick and no leaks.

He took a sample to garage that did original change and they deny everything as they would. It's looks as if the manager has tried to cover up the balls up to the owner because they said a new engine with only 30k on it fitted would cost him £500 so I think that proves they know what they have done.

My dad is going to take it up with the owner first to see where he gets.

This is from a local and very well respected garage. Looks like possibly the yts lad must have done the change.

Thats just awful, good luck in getting a resolution on this one. Why on earth was flushing oil put in it to start with though?!
This is why I do all my servicing and repairs myself, at least I know I've done a good job!!

Dont't mess about... write to the garage owner / manager setting out the details. Request replacement engine - free of charge. Make clear statement that you want response in 7 days, agreeing to replacement, and timetable for completion - if reponse not forthcoming you will issue smal claims summons. Hand deliver or recorded delivery. If nothing received, the get to the small claims and make the summons - it doesn't cost much. Even if still resisting, garage will probably cave in when they get the summons!
