Peugeot 405 glx alternator

Post by David Humphrey »

I noticed the ignition light glowing today. I got home this evening and tried to start car but wouldn't crank over. Jumpstarted it and took jumpleads off. Voltage across battery was below 12 and heading south. Assume alternator has failed. It is a valeo with a 6 groove pulley. It is sat under the power steering pump and looks a pig to get off.Wondered how interchangeable the alternator is if I try to get one from a breaker? It is a 1.9 diesel.
Thanks

Alternator is a pig to remove.

I done my 405 one with the XU10J2 engine by placing a sheet of ply behind the radiator & lifting the alternator up & out that way, It was tight though.

Theres about 6 or 7 different ones for the later 405, Just go with the same agian because the diesel is gonna have a high output alternator fitted as standard.

Thanks Powerlee, Is there any site where you can find the alternator types as the Haynes manual gives no clues at all.I have an older 405 here which I could strip it from.

Hi

Ive no idea other then a Pug parts cd rom where you could find the information on alternators fitted to the 405.

Remember the earlier pre facelift 405s used a alternator with a standard V drive belt & that wont fit a later 405 because the pully is different, Ive no idea if the pulley could be changed over or if it will even bolt onto the engine block.

If its a diesel then there are many 405s, 406, Xantia etc in the scrap yard with the XUD lump fitted, A recon alternator shouldnt be any more then £90 for this anyway if you want a warranty on it

Gave the body of the alternator a sharp tap and engine speed slowed and light went out.Voltage 14.14. Assume brushes are sticking.Looks as if the oil filter needs to come off to give enough room to get it out.

Rather than curse and swear I got the alternator overhauled today by a specialist repairer. He charged £75 to take it off , recondition it ( the slip rings were the problem apparently) and refit it.I didn't think that was too bad with a year's warranty.
