Clutch Question Xantia TD

Post by jgra1 »

Hi all, I have a good slightly used 1.8i Xantia clutch and am wondering if I can use it in my Xantia 1.9TD? I am 100% it will fit. Surely the 1.8 petrol is more powerful, are the torque figures going to be wildly different?

It depends on how you define "more powerful". The 1.8 petrol may have more horsepower near maximum revs, but less peak torque. In fact the 1.9TD has slightly more peak torque than even the 2.0i 8 valve petrol, and it's torque that matters for clutch ratings...

As Mandrake has said, the TD is more torquey, the figures aren't wildly different, the TD only has about 50% more peak torque ;)

Only about 50% more peak torque ... 8)

John - I wouldnt bother experiment with this. The risc of getting a slipping clutch out of this job is simply too large.

It won't fit - the TD uses a pull clutch and the 1.8 a conventional push clutch. The TD clutch may also be larger diameter. The 2.0 petrol uses the same pull clutch as the TD

thanks all
think i have to go with not risking it,

reference the pull/push - mine is ok now as I have a different 405 gearbox fitted, so this is the same as normal petrol xantias.. I.e. pull ? I think ;) same as 1.8i

anyone got a cluthc they can sell me by sat morning?

GSF list diferant part numbers for these clutches, and you can tell if you have a push or pull clutch by looking at the cable at the gear box end,if it a pull clutch the inner cable is atached to a fixed point and outer cable is atached to the fork lever, and if its a normal push type the inner cable is atached to the fork lever

Removed gearbox and clutch in 70 mins!! (getting too much practise at this)

well, the petrol 1.8i clutch housing is slightly smaller then TD so that made my decision for me.
re: push/pull
My Xantia was a pull type, but when i destroyed the gearbox in February, I put on the only spare I had, which was from a 1.8 TD 405. Gearbox is fine, works nicely, but there is no way of fitting the Xantia Pull extension on it, so I used 1.8 TD push clutch.

So, I Guess what I need now is a push type clutch for a 405 TD and that should be the end of it.. lowest price i am finding so far is around £50.. I just want the car off drive now.. :?

thats fine but make sure its a quality clutch kit not one of the cheapy kits on the market, one of my customers insisted he supplied his own clutch kit once, when i fitted it to make it work i had to adjust it right to the end of the adjustment, also it should be the same clutch as in the BXs,GSFs 04 retail catalouge shows this kit there part No.t18932 at a cost of £75 squide

chaps, i have been offered a clutch kit for a 1.9 Renault Diesel, push type (which I now need)

is this 1.9 engine same as Pug / Cit?

He says it fits R19's and 21's .. 21's all seem to be Turbo Diesel.

So, it may be good?

1997 Rover 220's had a 1994cc diesel which is a Rover/Perkins size I think.
