Outside temperature gauge

Unread post by Saw Doc Fan »

Hi there

Hubbys just bought a 404 2.0 GLX estate, and the outside temperature gauge is just flashing 2 dashes, could anyone advise how to get this working???

The sensors are prone to failure. It will probably be located in the driver's door mirror.

Just going by my Xantia which always gave a higher temp reading when the drivers side was facing the sun.

They can vary with age. On my old 306 it was in the passenger's door mirror; by the time my newer 306 was made they were putting them in the driver's door mirror.

As PowerLee says, look for the raised nubbin on the underside of one of the mirror's hinges. This is the sensor poking through a hole in an access panel which can be removed to get at the sensor. IIRC you will need to remove the whole mirror housing from the door to change the sensor.

Cheers everyone

the car is a 405 (not a 404) as i said in the 1st post... typo error, will do some investigating when the weather is a bit warmer.

I had same problem on my 1995 405 GTX. The temperature sensor is in the base of the passenger mirror.

I took the car to a Peugeot garage for another problem and mentioned the faulty temperature guage to see if the mechanics had any ideas. When I collected the car, they had repaired it (I hadn't asked them to) at a cost of around £70, which I objected to and they cancelled the charge!

They told me that the sensor was fine, it was a connection inside the passenger door that was causing the problem. Don't know if they just cleaned it up or had to replace parts. May be be a bit of a pain to take the door trim off though, if it's never been removed before.

I'd say the problem with the OP's car is more likely that the sensor has become disconnected, rather than gone wrong, and when the sensors fail, you usually get some rather odd readings on the temperature gauge (like 45C when it's clearly snowing outside!). However, unplug the sensor, and you then get 2 dashes rather than a temperature.

I'd check the plug in the door, and also the plug in the back of the display unit.

I'd defo check the cable in the rubber gaiter ...

Its such a common problem on recent cars as they are crammed with electronic gadges located in the doors which have their electric feeds all running the same route - and all strained each day you use the door ...

xantia temp sensor

Unread post by jgra1 »

mine always over-reads..

It seems to be accurate when you start the car, then, even on a icy morning, it climbs to 10 or so, (without Rear Screen on or With)

must be a sensor then..?

Passenger door mirror is the location
