Post by deian »

Hi People,

I've just done something, I hope I did the right thing. I bougth a car off ebay, didn't go to see it, but it looks lovely, worse thing about it the mileage 180,000, it's a 1998 2.1TD Exclsuive. £1295, cambelt changed at 172000, and 1 owner, looks nice and mint for mileage. What do you think ppl?

Thanks
Deian

Lovely car - don't think you will regret it. 180k, just run in! The whole clocking issue is because people's views of cars are stuck in the past. I remember back to the early 1980's when I had a VW Beetle and the VW mag had the 100,000 club as a sort of hall of fame.

All I can say is let them carry on thinking like that so we can all pick up high miles bargins. My 2.1td Exclusive is at 188k. I do 22k per year and expect to be keeping it another 3 or 4 years. There is no reason why modern cars, with a bit of care, can't do 300k+

Enjoy.

The last XM I sold had that engine and was still going strong at 292k miles! To make them last, change the oil every 5k, not necessary to use expensive oil, just oil that meets the required spec. The only major problem that can arise is the head gasket, if its already had one you'r laughing, but even if it fails its worth doing as it should give you another 100k +

Sounds good, I wouldn't worry about the mileage, cars don't do a lot of miles sat in a garage!

If it's covered that kind of distance then it has to have been looked after otherwise it would have died long ago.
