Starting problem

Post by qwerty »

Hi ,
Mybrother in laws 405 is getting difficult to start from cold .
It is a xud non turbo diesel.I have checked heater plugs and they are ok.Mileage is around 150k.Ibelieve the valve clearances can tighten up andcause low compression .I wonder if this could be the problem.Would be glad of any suggestions.
Thanks in antisipation.

If you are sure the glo-plugs are all OK and you are satisfied that the preheat system is right, try giving the fuel pump a prime with the hand lever. After priming try the starter. If the engine runs, you have leakage of air into the fuel system. You may be suffering from low compression, but unless the head has been off or the camshaft has been removed, the valve clearances shouldn't have altered too much. Rule out air in the fuel system first.

Hi JOHN,
I have pumped primer and engine seemed to start ok.I stripped down fuel filter assembly and found corrosion at bottom of filter bowl.Possibly a pinhole.I will fit new assembly after hollidays.
Let you know how I get on.
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL.
