Wiper problem

Post by np »

Hi to all, hope some one can give me some pointers here. Both my front & rear wipers work as they should. But for the last week or so now,if i try to wash the rear window,no water comes out AND the front wipers start wiping,as if on the wash mode.I`ve try`d it with the engine off & cant seem to here the washer motor running. The front wash as normal,& the rear will work as normal, except for the wash.
Is this likely to be the wiper stalk,or something a bit more tricky?
Thanks :)

Front & rear control effectively swapped ?
Thought that was only possible in muxed installations
Must be the stalk then.

Hmmm...

I had a thought about this -
Recently we have had a couple of Mk1 owners with electric Gremlins. Seems that the harness under the radiator in mysterious ways influence most of the electric equipment. Corrosion in one of those famous earth distibution points hidden underneath black tape ...

I'd certainly try this option too.

Anders i have also seen a couple of xants where the loom in the plastic duckting under the rad has rotted the insulation on the wires,it caused probs with air/con and rad fans,i have not seen this afect the wash wipe as yet,i think the best thing to do is rotate the duckting so the slit is at the bottom to stop water collecting inside of it

After doing my dash lights & airbag yesterday,i looked at the wiper stalk. After giving it a good spraying with WD40 & going through the motions with it,trying it seemed to work as normal. For about 10 secs :( .So it would apeer to be the stalk.
The problem is now though,is finding a replacement.Mine being the VSX,it has the adjustable intermitent feature on it.The 4 Xantia`s in the local scrapy(2 SX`s,2 LX`s)dont have this feature. There were no 406`s to check either. :)

Im pretty sure a 406 WONT have the variable intermittent wipe function on the stalk, The high spec 406s had rain sensing wipers.

The 405 STI / STDT & the late MI16 & Le - Mans had the variable wipe function if you can find one & the stalk is the same one.

A MI16 & Le - Mans where only ever a saloon so they look like they are no use to you.

A new switch is around £68 from a Citroen dealer

Neil, you will need to source a stalk from a VSX Xantia built from around 95 onwards as the earlier versions had the rear wiper controlled via a series of switches on the right hand side of the dash itself.

I think it's going to be a hen's teeth job since the later Exclusives had auto wipers instead of intermittent.

Stephen,

I think Neil works away during the week, so probably not a chance to reply yet!

If you've going back to the scrappy I might be interested in a hydractive valve. I'd prefer the rear one, as that seems less likely to be leaky, but it's probably a lot more difficult to get off (as it's right under the back, next to the spare wheel). Interested to know how much the guy might want for it.

Here i am!! :D
Sorry for the delay, been down in Lands end since the last post, just got back tonight for the rest of the week as its high tide all week & cant work.
Anyway, thanks for that Fridgedoc, but,it would seem that the WD40 i sprayed on it has worked.By the time a got back down to Lands end last suday week,i had done over 600m`s that weekend, all in the wet/rain.So the stalk got a lot of use.The rear washer part is now working as normal,i.e no front wipers when trying to wash the rear window. So i think it may have just been a bit of dirt or something,& the WD40 & high use of the wiper stalk sorted it. :)
Will keep you informed if it plays up again, but as RichardW says,i`m away most weeks at the mo near Land end working.
Cheers to all :D :)
