Xantia: speedo stays at 50

Post by drewmunn »

I have a 1.9TD LX, 1995, The speedo goes from zero to 50 and stays there. The odometer works fine. Any ideas?

Sounds like the instrument itself is faulty, whether its mchanical or electronic, if the odometer is working, its receiving the necessary drive/pulses.

Thanks Peter, so is it a speedo thats required as in the visible dashboard part, or could other parts be involved?

I would think that it would just be the panel instrument. If you take it out, you may be able to unstick it, the needle is probably touching the scale or possibly the glass (plastic!).

This particular fault has been reported quite a few times. More often than not it turns out to be the sensor on the gearbox - I found a thread earlier on where Jon said GSF were knocking out loads of them. It might be worth tracing the wiring back first and checking for any dodgy connections.

Ah! what Richard says has just made me think, maybe I misunderstood. Does the speedo needle stay at 50 permantly, or does it drop back to zero when you stop? If the latter, Richard could well be right.
