406 Dip / Main Beam

Post by Malcolm »

Anyone got any advice / experience of this issue. I got a May '96 406L DT about a year ago that the wife has been using - day time use. I am now driving it and the head lights are not right.

The dash - height adjustment is on it's lowest and with dipped beam on it's only just low enough. Anyone in back and it's too high.
Putting main beam on lights up road more just in front of car than the road in distance.

All bulbs are H7.The dipped lights are the h/l next to indicaters i.e. out side, and main next to radiator grill - inner ones.

I'm not aware of car having any bumps before I got it from friend. Access is very limited for attempting any adjustment. Just wondered if anyone had an idea of what the problem / solution is. Thanks.

For normal driving with one person the dash height adjuster should be set to 0.

Turn the adjuster wheel so the numbers get higher & you will then find the light beams get closer to the front of the car.

Check the setting of your height adjuster & if its still not correct go & see your friendly garage, Speak to one of the lads & slip them some beer tokens to set the lights up on the beam alignment machine

The only problem ive heard of is either the motors that adjust the headlamps die or the little ball joint comes apart & the motor cant adjust the lamp correctly.

The dash adjustment works OK i.e. up & down, but the lowest setting is too high and main beam lights a shorter distance than dip.

I'm sure I can get someone to resolve it, but hat's not the point of this forum is it?

If this were set up correctly from new, how come they are acting up as if reversed?

If it's acting in reverse then why not swop the connections to the bulbs and see what happens?
