309 central locking problem

Post by pazz »

My 1993 309 has central locking (not remote) which has started behaving erratically - all doors lock and unlock at random while the car is in motion, and even when it's parked. I've taken the fuse out for the moment as a temporary fix. Are there any common failures which could cause this? The Haynes manual isn't very helpful, it shows a central locking system in a wiring diagram, but it is the remote control type. It shows a control unit, but doesn't state where it is located. I'm tempted to look at the switch in the driver's door first, as this gets the most use, or maybe broken wires at the driver's door hinge. Any other suggestions? I have a multimeter available, but I'm not sure what checks to make.

Ive no idea where the 309 central locking control box is located, But a favourite place to hide it for Peugeot / Citroen is up behind the glovebox.

I would make sure all the doors are adjusted so they shut & latch correctly.

Make sure the manual locking buttons are free to go up & down & not stiff.

Check the tailgate motor & fuel flap ( if fitted ) motor rods & linkage are free to move & not stiff.

A motor or its connection may have got wet & that will upset the central locking.

Put the fuse back in, Wait for the fault to happen & try unplugging one motor at a time to see which ones causing the bother.

Start with the boot, fuel flap if it has one, rear doors if its a 5 door, front passenger door & then the drivers one last.

if you have no remote central locking there is no control unit, the drivers door lock is a motor but that is not connected as you move it manually with the key, this motor inside has a switch inside which controlls power to other locking motors put your fuse back in and disconnect drivers door lock motor/switch if all ok then replace motor/switch.

From memory the control box is on a bracket fixed to the steering column.

I'd be tempted to check the interior light switches on the door pillars and that all the doors close properly and that non of the latches need adjusting.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I couldn't find a control unit behind the glovebox or on the steering column, but I found that the problem occurred when the fusebox was moved. I lowered the fusebox and noticed one of its connectors was not fully home, and found from the Haynes manual this was the power feed to the central locking.
