That price may be a little high but very close to the mark.KennyW wrote:Sugestions request!

Don't head this way without it working whatever you do.
A fortnight ago I was travelling out Central Western New South Wales and stopped at a park just on the border for lunch. Had a quick cuppa and an equally quick bite to eat as it was even too hot to sit in the shade of the trees. As we swung into the main street heading out of town, the thermometer in the Xantia hit 50 Yep Five - Oh Celcius
Whilst we were away, I also was driving home one night at 11pm and couldn't believe the thermometer was sitting on 35 even then. When we got out the car on both occasions it felt like it too. Not much doubts our planet's getting warmer regardless of what they might try to tell us. I've lived out here most of my life and I've never felt anything like it. Air/con is no longer a luxury here now, it's almost a case of life and death in some places.

Can't quite beat 50 degrees, but had a real scorcher here the other day...
Driving home from work at 5:30pm and the Xantia's outside temp guage hit 42 degrees.........42 at 5:30pm!
Mind you that was in the middle of town so you get a bit of help from the "heat island effect" where tarmac and buildings help cause heat buildup. But even when I got out of the centre of town it was still 39.
I didn't think we ever got to 42 in New Zealand, let alone in the evening, but on the other hand I've never had a car with an outside temperature reading before to notice...
The air-con seemed to cope ok with that temperature although it took about 5 minutes to cool the cabin down.... I REALLY must find that intermitant air-con fault as when it decides its NOT going to turn on on a 42 degree day its very unpleasant to say the least
Regards,
Simon

Where I am it often tops 40 even on overcast days and a dark blue, almost black car will get stifling hot within a minute of switching the engine off.Mandrake wrote:

It must have been someone with a warped sense of humour who exported to any Tropical country, a dark blue car with a glass sunroof with no shade cover. I've had to blank it off to prevent more sun cancers than we already have.
As regards your intermittent air/con fan, I fortunately got this sorted just before the hobs of hades started (thank you Clogzz). You must have missed it. Common fault that most with air/con have.
Good job for a Saturday arvo; only takes an hour at the most to do.

Hi Alan,
Unless I'm mistaken, that thread describes a different problem to mine. I don't have any problems with the internal blowers or the ignition key contacts, nor the radiator fans.
The problem with mine is that the compressor clutch is sometimes not being activated. I've already cleaned and checked the contacts on the compressor clutch feed plug, and the pressure sensor switch on top of the dryer bottle.
Other threads that I've read suggest my symptoms are more like a bad connection to the bitron sensor (I also occasionally get the intermitant high fan speed and temperature warning light) but its not clear exactly where the bitron is in my car, or what it looks like.
It's most likely the version that has it under the front left headlight so its waiting for a convienient time for me to take out the headlight and see if it actually is there.
By the way my Xantia is dark blue as well, but fortunately it doesn't have a sun roof

Simon

I don't know that the Bi-tron controls the compressor; the fans, yes.
Usually they have a seperate relay controlling the compressor due to the sudden power surge created by snapping a solenoid in, but I also understand that Xantias have an internal fan that circulates ambient temperature across the sensor for the air/con, in which case, an intermittent problem with that would also lead to a problem such as you describe.

Can't find it now, but read a story of one of the aircon bottles having a 4-wire plug, 2 thick, 2 thin.
With engine stopped, or even with the key out, shorting the 2 thick wires should turn on the compressor clutch, and shorting the 2 thin wires should start the cooling fans at low speed.
There's also this about Pug 405, with clickable map:

I'd reckon he's already checked that one, (as above.)Mandrake wrote:Hi Alan,
