Xantia knocking

Post by walcit »

I recently replaced the drivers side drop link on my 1994 1.9d xant lx. I replaced it due to some knocking noises I was getting on the drivers side, whenever I went over a bump or drove over a fairly rough surface. Problem is, it didnt improve the noise. Ive had a look around the drivers arch, cant see much. The only thing I noticed is that the handbrake cable had some of the rubber coating 'rubbed' away off it. Possibly by the wheel?!? (dont know if this is appropriate) Any way, What could this knocking noise be? I tested it the other night again, it sounded as if something was tapping a sphere somewhere (could be just the vibration going through the strut up to the sphere). I put the car on full height, and drove a little distance over some really rough surface, the knocking wasnt as prominent. It improved probably 90%. Please could you advise as to what this knocking could be? I am hoping it's not a strut cus I dont really want to spend anymore on this car!!
Also the hydraulic system seems to be in good condition, although I am not an expert!!

Hi Walcit,

Did you replace only one side and have you carried out any other repairs to steering or suspension recently?

Yes only replaced one side because the noise comes from drivers side. No work has been done on suspension recently. If you go over a speed bump on the passenger side, there is no noise. If you go over on the drivers side there is a noise.

I agree, lower ball joint. My ZX had the same noise and that was the culprit.

Add in Loose subframe, anti roll bar support bearing, engine mount, loose bumper and other trim just for starters.

Incidentally the handbrake cable should be secured so that it doesn't touch the wheel. I think this will sound a bit like a driveshaft joint failure if it contacts the wheel.
