Xantia Gearbox - 2.0i and 1.9TD

Post by adzbaby »

Hi there,

Just a quickie, this may be a stupid question and I think it is, but I had a guy tell me that the gearboxes from a 1.9TD and a 2.0i 8v Xantia (both L regs) are the same and are compatible, is it the ML5 box? That didn't seem quite right to me as I thought the torque difference between the two engines would require different setups.

Also if that is the case then are the clutch and flywheel the same.

Many thanks and enjoy the weekend.

Adam.

The gearboxes might be the same, but the final drive ratio won't be - the diesel has much longer gearing.

According to the, dare I say, Haynes manual, only the 2.1 td uses the BE3 box, so the ML5 box would fit but as Nisk says, the final drive ratio wont suit a petrol engine. It will be a bit slow to get away! The clutch will probably be heftier due to the greater torque from the diesel so the friction plate may have a different sized centre, but you could use the petrol plate, so that shouldn't be a problem. If you are going to take the gearbox out you might as well change the engine as well, for a diesel.

Peter - are you sure about the use of the BE3 with the 2.1 diesel? - BX's use BE3 boxes with numerous variations in ratios according to applications - and none of them are 2.1's (I wish they were!)

Many apologies Jeremy   I have now re read the manual and apologised to it, it says "All models exept 2.1 diesel....BE3" " 2.1 litre diesel models ......ML5T" Thats the second mistake this week, I think I will have to give this up!

No ... nooh, Peter, stay with us ! Image
We all make mistakes, and I certainly do too.
There are at least 2 instances that I know of where I posted wrong information this week.
Despite that, tomorrow the sun will still rise. :D
