S reg Xantia. Lights and Clocks not working

Hi

Have a problem with an S reg petrol Xantia. The lights and clocks have stopped working and i have been told by the garage that its the ECU.. I'm not so sure so i thought i'd come on here and ask the people that would know.

What is it likely to be?

Having doubts too.
Why couldn't they start with something simple and cheap like the fuses ?

Check brown 5 Amp and red 10 Amp fuses in fuse box under dash.
