Cheap motoring?

Unread post by RichardW »

I always thought bangernomics was they way to go, but after 2 hours last night in the dark, thick fog and -5°C stripping the driver's door on our ZX to get the lock mechanism out and lubricate it so that the door would shut, I was seriously questioning a) my sanity and b) my choice of transport.

Mind you, one look at the daler price for an oil change is enough to set me back on the right path

And the door opens and closes better than it's ever done 8)

I know the feeling Richard, Thursday is D day for my Xantia (MOT day), not looking forward to it at all....

At least the CX hasn't broken down for two weeks!

This locks thing must be someting to do with the cold weather, as I've just had to do three of the four locks on my ZX in the last 2 weeks. Mind you, it doesn't take me 2 hours now, practice makes perfect!

Since its fresh in your mind, can you give me a bit of detail on how to get them out and back in again without ruining everything up...as i hate door cards and dont have the confidence to remove the locks as i have sad memorys with doors and locking and i dont want to ask Wilkobob to do it!

Probably wouldn't have taken 2 hours had it not been dark and cold, but hey!

It's pretty easy:

Remove speaker cover and then unscrew and remove speaker (careful not the strain the wires - it's easy to break the wires on the speakers.
Carefully lever out window switch, and disconnect the wiring connector(s) - if you've got manual windows you probably need to push the card back next to the handle then carefully lever out the clip so you can pull the handle off.
Remove the three Torx screws holding the arm on (1 in the hole where the window switches were and two underneath the lower part.
Carefully lever off the interior door handle surround.
Press in the small button on the interior lock button and pull the button off
Carefully lever off the trim panel around the mirror adjuster
Now carefully ease the door panel away from the door - I start at the bottom outside corner, and carefully slide a screwdriver in behind the panel, and the work it upwards till you find a clip, get it as close to the clip as possible then lever the clip out. As long as you are close to the clip it should pop out of the door. Once all the clips are removed, lift the door panel off the window track and remove it.
Slide the interior handle forwards so it pops out the door and disconnect the operating rod
Carefully cut away the foam sealing panel at the rear top and bottom so you can access the inside of the door.
Lever off the clip securing the lock barrel (I just used a screw driver against the inside of the door) and work the barrel out, disconnecting the control rod as it comes out.
Disconnect the wires from the bottom of the lock solenoid
Undo the 3 screws securing the lock to the back of the door, and then work the lock out of the door.

When refitting, make sure you get the outer handle connected in the right place, and don't trap the operating wire for the outer lock barrel.

As said, it's easier the second time!
