106 xsi misfire

Since running the tank dry - my car has been misfiring. Firstly i added injector cleaner to the next tank of petrol, this didn't help. I then changed the fuel filter, spark plugs and ignition leads (the plugs are ngk, but not the ones specified for my car (106 1.4 inj) by andyspares. I was unsure whether the engine is fussy about spark plugs?). I'm thinking it was coincidental but my coil then broke which took out the ignition module. I fitted a new coil and "salvaged" ignition module, but the misfire still persists. I am thinking it is a fuelling/injection problem - but running out of ideas. The fuel filter didn't look like it had been changed (in 100,000 miles), i cut it open the paper filter element had collapsed. My car idles ok. The misfire is most noticeable under load e.g. when pulling away at 20 in third. Any feedback would be great, thanks.
