Accurate fuel gauge ?

Post by KAD »

Xantia 1.9 TD - The fuel gauge on my car is rather inaccurate,
it falls into the catagory of a rough guide rather than a well
calibrated instrument.
Drive, then switch off and drive again and the level shown can
be quite a bit higher or lower. Sticky sender unit maybe? Are
they all like this?

Compared to my Xantia's fuel gauge, I'd get better readings of the amount of fuel in my tank by sticking a wet finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing.
The only thing you can accurately gauge is whether the car is full of fuel, having got back into it at the petrol station, and whether its imminently about to run out of fuel, when the light comes on, anything in between is pure guess work.

Trouble is, unless you weigh the car, or dip the tank, you never know if the dial is accurate unless it's completely ( visibly ) full, or obviously dry.
Most dials are not linear either !
Factors such as the slope and camber of the road can affect the needle, sometimes, accelerating or braking will slightly as well !
I know from experience <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle> that when the needle is resting on the stop at the bottom, the tank is empty <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
Generally, when the warning light starts to become consistently on, there is enough fuel for approx 80 - 100 miles ( TD )
