Clutch Change 1.9TD

Clutch Change 1.9TD
Will shortly be changing the clutch in my 1.9td... Which is the best clutch? I have seen a Valeo clutch for £85. GSF are quoting £76.50 + Vat but I don't know what make.... any feedback / advice would be gratefully received.

I would think that the GSF one would be OK, the do have a reputation to maintain. Valeo are well known so I would have thought would be OK. As the cost of the clutch is minimal compared with the labour cost if you had to pay to have it fitted. its worth fitting the best. Ask your friendly local Citroen agent what they fit.

I have seen a number of remanufactured clutches fail prematurely, i always use OEM ones now, theres too much work in the job to have to do it again, Valeo is AFAIK an oem clutch.

Citroens are mostly fitted with Valeo clutches. Valeo in turn may have their parts delivered from sub-contractors.
I have never heard of a failing remanufactured clutch ?
But I have heard that clutches fails shortly after replacement because of bad work : only replacing visible worn parts.
If you fit a new/recon clutch complete kit there is no reason why it wont last as long as the factory fitted.
Over the years I have used Valeo and LUK clutch kits with absolutely no problems.
A complete kit contains :
new driven plate (the one with friction material and gearbox axle splines)
new or recon spring plate (both will look bright new - you cant see the difference)
new release bearing
In addition it is very intelligent to replace the crank seal behind the flywheel and the cam seal (if pump fitted/driven by cam above flywheel) - to prevent oil spill destroying the new clutch.
Oilspill will destroy the friction plate as it will fill up the friction material with glazed carbon. This makes the clutch judder or snatch.

The failed part I saw was the driven plate, in a TD Xantia, the friction material had detatched from the metal part and the whole thing looked like it was burnt!, it had apparently failed in normal motoring.

Thanks very much for your advice and comments as always guys. I can't wait to see this clutch when I take it of.... it seems as if it is in the process of breaking up...possibly due to driving the car for a long time with the gearbox slowly departing from the engine (previous threads).

They get away with it because they like to service and maintain Company cars... and they can charge what they like and Companys pay it!! So sod the private car owner, they represent a small % of their business.

Most fleet cars don't go anywhere near the main dealers as far as I've seen. Most of the service histories showed they'd gone to where ever was most convenient / cheapest for the person running the car for oil changes. That often includes famous fast fit garages, the sort of place I'm not exactly happy about taking my car to.zzf00l wrote:They get away with it because they like to service and maintain Company cars... and they can charge what they like and Companys pay it!! its quite an involved job really. I have done two in two months..
For first clutch, Garage quoted me 9 hours labour!.. and that quote ended up at £5-600
So I did my TD last week, and my 1.8 i before xmas.
Couple of points,
The main thing to watch for, esp on petrol cars, is the plastic holder for the release bearing can be knocked out of relase arm, when putting box back on.. if this happens, as i suspect it did when someone did my petrol xantia before i brought car, the release bearing holder destroys itself, and scores the gearbox input shaft, this then led to a very notchy clutch action (this is the state i brought car in, and probably why it was cheap)
also, I fitted a 'Precision Clutch' for £50 inc p and p. and the action is very springy, on - off, very hard to pull away smoothly. Otherwise its fine. Was hoping the springyness would go after time?
I think I could do either car again, in a very lucky 3 hours...
and as for putting the cables/hoses back in the plastic router on top of gearbox, no comment !!!

As a matter of interest did your 'Precision' clutch have a machined rather than a polished face on the presser plate? the reason I ask is that many years ago I fitted a new clutch in a Cortina 2000GT and this had a machined face. I didn't think anything of it until I came to reverse it off the ramps and stalled it 3 times! It was wonderfully fierce for a little while then settled down and was fine.
