Xantia replacement CV boot strap

Post by MickyA »

I need help pulling up my boot straps! I recently replaced a CV boot on my Xantia 1.9TD but haven't been able to get the supplied straps sufficiently tight to prevent grease escaping. Is there a specialist plier available for this or does anyone know a practical workaround? The boot is standard GSF fare and has three possible tightness positions (clumsy description but hope you get my drift),- it's currently in the middle one. I could use a jubilee clip but it wouldn't fit into the recess moulded into the boot for the strap. Suggestions welcome.

Use a plastic cable tie, they are easy to tension, just pull!

Thanks Peter,- a cable tie doesn't quite fit in the recess though I'm going to use one anyway. I'm still intrigued about the supplied strap though, does anyone know how this is fitted?

Depends on the width of the cable tie your using, ive seen two sizes.....a really thick bulky one and a 'normal' thin one which im sure should quite easily fit in the recess (thinking back to the ZX days of CV boots)

I always use cable ties.
It is possible to fit the metal ones by hand, but I think they're meant to be used with a hand tool, which tensions and crimps the strap.

There is a tip in the Haynes manual, which states to bend the end of a coathanger over by ~ 20mm, feed that through the hole in the boot strap and pull on the coat hanger with pliers to get the tension.

Havent tried it myself though... and i would advise caution, you dont want to slip and jab the other end of the coat hanger into your eye
