xantia accumulator?

Post by ralph »

I've got my first problem with the Xantia (1.8 16v) - it's ticking like mad and cutting out.
On start-up, it idles for about two seconds, then the revs drop and it stalls as the suspension settles itself. The car ticks about three times a second when cold. The engine can only keep going if revved up, otherwise it fluctuates between idle and amost stalling for a few seconds, and then dies.
After it's warmed up, it will idle, and the car ticks once every 14 seconds.
So, my question is, is it a knackered accumulator sphere which is struggling to pressurise and thus dragging down the engine so it stalls?
Or is there more to it than that??

Thanks...

MAY be more than just the acc sphere ...

But my advice is to solve the obvious problem first - then judge whats left.
Try first give your Xantia a new acc sphere. Then come back here for a discussion of remaining symptoms.
The sphere is only some £20 incl a new seal.

Eventually got this sorted by Citroen specialists Citraulix, in Bradford. I thought the idle stepper motor was the problem (the car still failed to idle properly with the sensor disconnected), but Citraulix replaced the MAP sensor, and all is well. They charged £29 for a second-hand sensor.
Also got them to change the accumulator sphere (I couldn't budge it with a BOA strap wrench). So no more ticking.
